What happens if there's no GPS signal in the place where information is being collected?

Learn what happens to the recorded location when the device can't get a GPS signal, and what you can check to fix the problem.

When you complete a form, DataScope tries to record the device's location. If the device can't get a valid location at that moment, the answer might show the last available location or be left without coordinates.

📍 GPS and internet are not the same thing

It's important to distinguish between the GPS signal and the internet connection.

You can use DataScope without an internet connection and still get a GPS location. Location availability mainly depends on the device and its location services.

What can happen when a location isn't obtained?

If the device can't determine its location at the time of completing the answer, two things can happen:

  • The last location available on the device is recorded.

  • No location is recorded, and the coordinates field is left blank.

This depends on the device's ability to get a location at that moment.

📱 How do I know if the problem is with the device?

You can check whether the device is getting its location correctly by using a maps app, such as Google Maps.

  1. Open the maps app.

  2. Check whether it can determine your current location.

  3. If it shows a previous location, the device may not be getting the location signal correctly.

  4. Check that location services are turned on and that DataScope has permission to use them.

If the device also can't determine your location in other apps, the problem is likely related to the device or its settings.

🔧 How do I turn on location services?

If you need to check or turn on location permissions for DataScope, see: How do I turn on location services for DataScope?

📌 Important

Lack of an internet connection doesn't necessarily mean the device can't get GPS coordinates. DataScope can store the coordinates obtained on the device and sync them later once it has a connection again.
